5 signs that you’re an intrapreneur

There’s a very subtle difference between an entrepreneur and an intrapreneur.

Both might see a problem that requires a solution. One will create a business to provide this solution, the other will work within the system to enable a solution.

Both are worthy and both are necessary to solve the issues facing the world today.

An entrepreneur is someone who is innovative, free-thinking, driven and passionate about an issue. They are comfortable with risk and willing to put their money on the line to build their own business from the ground up.

An intrapreneur often has many of the same characteristics – they are innovative, driven, solutions focused and passionate. The key difference is they are using their skills to create change within the system.

Here are 5 signs that you might be an intrapreneur:

1.     You are passionate about the industry you’re working in

Whether that’s teaching, nursing, law or any variation of government, NGO or corporate, you truly believe in the value your industry provides. You see the potential to create lasting change and impact through the service or product you’re providing. AND you can also see the challenges that are inherently built into the system.

2.     You’re a visionary

You see opportunities to create change. You’re curious about how you can improve the system, create change, foster greater resilience, encourage more uptake. The challenges you see fuel your drive to create improvements.

3.     You bring people together

You don’t work in a silo. You bring people together across the organisation because you know that change doesn’t happen in isolation. You have a gift for inspiring people to your vision, and you nurture your relationships.

4.     You see failure as a stepping stone

“No” to you means “not yet”. You look for ways around the problem. Barriers and obstacles of bureaucracy just encourages you to look for a way around, over or under the red tape. You challenge the status quo and you’re not afraid to make a mistake as you create a new way of doing things.

5.     If something doesn’t feel aligned you aren’t afraid to walk

If your values are not aligned with where you’re working, you’re not afraid to look for somewhere you will be appreciated. You know you have talent, drive and vision to help drive change within the system and improve the way things are done. If this isn’t supported where you are, you’re unlikely to hang around long.
